Elan Babchuck has served as a rabbi at Temple Emanu-El of Providence, Rhode Island since July of 2012. The first-ever religious leader to be named one of Providence Monthly’s “10 to Watch,” his primary focus has been to break down barriers of entry into a vibrant and meaningful Jewish life.
Drawing on earlier experiences as a small business owner, entrepreneur, and community organizer, Elan has sparked numerous initiatives, built cross-organizational partnerships, and partnered with community rabbis and Jewish professionals to co-found a first-of-its-kind young professional organization in Rhode Island: (401)J.
Elan’s love of Judaism was first cultivated at Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston, where he now serves as the Alumni Chair. Additionally, he serves as an active lay leader for JOIN for Justice, and as the chairman of the executive board of the new venture, Tzedek America - a social justice-oriented Jewish gap-year program based in Los Angeles. He is also one 24 rabbis chosen from around the world to participate in CLAL’s Rabbis Without Borders fellowship.
Elan was ordained by the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in 2012, and earned an MBA in Nonprofit Management from the American Jewish University that year.
