While on a Dartmouth College foreign study program in Toulouse, Elena Barr Baum became intrigued with the Holocaust after living with a woman whose mother remembered their neighbors hiding Jews during World War II. A volunteer for the Holocaust Commission of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater (Virginia) for 11 years, Elena became its professional director in 2010, as "What We Carry," an initiative to capture and preserve survivors' stories, was coming online. In its first 30 months, it has been seen by over 14,000 students, military personnel, and community and church group members. Shipping of the program to other communities began in the spring of 2014.
